A TANKER convoying fuel exploded yesterday at Maje town an outskirt of the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja killing two persons, and destroying 27 shops and three houses, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has confirmed.
Meanwhile, Dutse Emirate Council of Jigawa State was thrown into mourning yesterday following the death of eight traditional rulers and three trade unionists in a ghastly motor accident.
NEMA also confirmed that another incident occurred on Saturday evening along Nyanya Express road where a trailer ran over a Hilux van and immediately lost control and rammed into 12 vehicles, killing one person.
The Head of NEMA Abuja Operation Office Ishaya Chonoko, confirmed that two dead bodies were recovered and six persons who were injured following the crash were taken to hospital for treatment.
He added that two houses were completely razed while 27 shops were burnt after the tanker exploded.
The accident, which occurred at Tsafe Council of Zamfara State claimed seven lives on the spot while the others four died in the hospital.
Four persons who were said to be critically injured are receiving treatment at Danmasara Specialist Hospital Dutse.
The victims were on their way to Arugungun, Kebbi State for a wedding of one of the village heads when their driver lost control.
Also, a team of experts from NEMA at the weekend was in Nguru and Gashua Council of Yobe State to assess damages caused by heavy rain that rendered residents homeless and destroyed farmlands.
While inspecting the areas, the Director General of NEMA, Muhammad Sani-Sidi, told the traditional rulers in the area to brace up to climatic challenges and mobilise their people to take proactive measures against future recurrence of the calamity.
